Spring Lawn Care Tips
It is time to start the Springtime Clean Up projects and with the wet conditions and temperatures increasing the grass, plants and trees will soon be blooming. Here is a list of tips to get you started on your Spring yard clean up.
Perennials
All crape myrtles and other flowering trees, grass plants and perennials need to be pruned back at this time of the year. Pruning back crape myrtles and all other perennials will not only enhance the flowering while eliminating all of the old growth, but it will also make the plant healthier and more disease resistant.
Scalping
Scalping, or de-thatching can help to eliminate the dead grass (thatch) that builds up through the summer mowing and can begin to choke out the new growth. Scalping allows new growth to come up faster and
easier.
De-thatching the grass allows sunlight into the soil, which warms the ground accelerates the new growth. Without scalping the heavy thatch can cause an unbalanced growth pattern that can affect the overall beauty of your lawn throughout the growing season.
Pre-Emergent
February and early March is the best time to put out this weed preventing fertilizer. The pre-emergent will help to prevent weeds from taking over your yard. The weeds start to show as soon as we start getting warm temperatures. Why is it that weeds seem to grow faster than our grass?
Applying pre-emergent to your lawn now will help you have less of a weed problem during the summer months. A contractor licensed with Texas Department of Agriculture can provide a wealth of information such as what and how to prune, what fertilizer to use, how much and what fertilizer to use later throughout the season and other tips to keep your yard looking its best throughout the seasons.
Lawn Aeration
Lawn aeration is the secret weapon in making your lawn healthy. Aeration involves making holes in the lawn by extracting plugs of soil. Benefits include:
1. Oxygen gets to the roots,
2. Fertilizers and nutrients get access to the root system, and
3. Water is able to better soak the soil and reach the root system.
Aerating your lawn can result in a better looking, healthier and more disease resistant lawn all season!
Irrigation
Schedule a time with your lawn maintenance contractor, or hire a professional irrigation contractor, to access your irrigation controller and perform a full system check, controller setup and perform needed repairs. Make sure that they check the performance of each sprinkler head, especially pop-ups. Many times, a sprinkler head just needs to be cleaned up as debris can settle into the nozzle over the winter. Otherwise, replace any that are simply not up to the task any longer.
